This pair of decorative over sleeves features landscape and figure embroideries. Mountain paths full of twists and turns are the main body, with pavilions, trees, persons and rocks on both sides; the scene is well proportioned, with chains of mountains, rippling waters, luxuriant trees where birds are twittering, and pavilions and terraces, full of dynamism and rhythm. People are walking, appreciating the beautiful scenery, taking a rest or rafting on the water, pleased and contented, like living in a heaven of peace. In the distance, clouds are winding around the mountains, leaving the rest to your imagination. Zong Bing in the Southern Song Dynasty wrote in Preface of Landscape Paintings,“Landscape is both substantial and lively”. This embroidery work with landscape and figure designs expresses the artist’s good wish of indulging himself in the mountains and waters.
