On the afternoon of 4th August, Qiu Yong, President of Tsinghua University visited Tsinghua University Art Museum, which was going to open in September, and saw how the work related to the Art Museum was progressing including preparation for the opening. Accompanied by Feng Yuan, Curator of Tsinghua University Art Museum and Honorary Dean of Academy of Art & Design, Tsinghua University and others, Qiu Yong visited exhibition rooms on each floor and listened to the introduction to the opening exhibition.

On the investigation symposium, Feng Yuan introduced that Art Museum related work was progressing from the stage of infrastructure to that of exhibition arrangement in a planned way. He pointed out that the aim of the museum was to pursue classic quality, academic value, innovation consciousness and people-oriented service, communicate cultures not only to Tsinghua faculty and students, but also the whole society and visitors nationwide, as well as the rest of the world. In terms of development strategies, the museum would not only display the classic art works representing Chinese culture recognized by experts, but also pay attention and provide supports and service to contemporary art creation so as to strives to build itself into the best university museum in China.

Nearly 30 participants were present at the symposium, including Lu Xiaobo, Li Gongqiang, Zhang Gan, Liu Jude , Lu Xinhua, Xu Hong, Wang Xiaomei, responsible persons from President Office, Development Planning Division, Infrastructure Construction Division, Humanities Division, Policy Research Office,as well as responsible persons from divisions of the Art Museum.

Lu Xiaobo, Zhang Gan, Liu Jude and Xu Hong gave speeches at the symposium, giving suggestions on how Art Museum would play its educational role fully, how to build up long-term system for university education and cultural construction, how to have in-depth communication with world-renowned university museums and how to expand building of disciplines relevant to the museum.

In his speech, Qiu Yong said in the midst of building up a world first-class university, the university had paid close attention to and fully supported the construction of Art Museum. He believed that this palace of art, carrying expectations from generations of Tsinghua faculty, students and leaders, would be unveiled to be a surprise in September. The university would soon set up a coordination group to push forward Art Museum related work, and build a long-term system for Art Museum development and promote its development through multiple channels.

Qiu Yong was hoping that Academy of Art & Design could make full use of discipline advantages in building Art Museum, and with this opportunity, further clarify directions for discipline development and make a good plan using the university’s cross-discipline platform to have cutting-edge interdisciplinary research so as to promote Tsinghua’s art disciplines to a higher level.
