Su Dan's Profile

Su Dan, born in 1967, Shanxi Province, used to work as the Director of Department of Environmental Art Design and Vice Dean of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. Su Dan holds posts concurrently as Vice Director of Tsinghua University Art Museum, Professor of Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, Vice Dean of Tsinghua University Institute for Cultural Economy, Director of Key Lab of Traditional Crafts and Materials Research, Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Su Dan also works as the Chairman of Interior Design Council in China Architectural Committee, Members of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Political Consultative Conference, Visiting professor of Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti di Milano and Domus Academy, Distinguished Visiting Professor of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts,Shanghai University, Doctoral Supervisor of Faculty of Humanities and Arts of Macau University of Science and Technology. Su Dan professionally performs as famous designer, design educator, critic and art curator. He is mainly engaged in the research of contemporary design education transformation, industrial heritage protection and cultural creative industry development.

 

As a writer and critic, Professor Su Dan has published more than ten academic works in recent years, including Page 1001: Su Dan’s Art and Design Verse (2018), The Lost Ways: The History of Chinese Environmental Art Development (2014), Design Eggs of Arts and Crafts (2012), Opinions and Suggestions (2010), etc.

 

As a curator, Professor Su Dan curated and planned the “2018 Tsinghua University Art and Capital Forum”, the sound installation “Sounds of Granary: Mouths” to participate in the 2017 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season, “Tsinghua Scholar Group Series Exhibition -- Tsinghua Scholar Group Academic Seminar (2014-2017)”, exhibition “21st Century Human Circle: A Mobile and Evolving School” to participate in the 21st Milan International Triennial (2016, Milan), documentary exhibition “Land ·Nostalgia·Memory” (2016, Florence), “The First Chengdu Land Art Festival” (2016), dance drama “Puzzle Me” (2015, Milan), exhibition “Endless Feast” (2015, Milan), exhibition “The Past and Present of the Ancient City” for the Gwangju Design Biennale, Korea (2015, Gwangju). 

 

As a designer, Professor Su Dan has served as the project leader of the design of China Pavilion at the Milan Expo 2015, the environmental art design of the Chinese diplomatic missions abroad, the landscape planning and design of Beijing Qianmen Street, the design of Chao Chung Ting Science and Technology Museum, and the landscape design of the APEC Summit 2014 “Golden Autumn in Summer Palace” conference venue, the 1895 Industrial Relics Reconstruction Plan of Tangzha, Nantong and other well-known design projects at home and abroad. Among them, the China Pavilion of Milan Expo won the Gold Award of Public Architecture in the Architectural Creation Award issued by the Architectural Society of China (2016), and won the "Bronze Award of the Milan Expo Large Module Building Award" by International Exhibitions Bureau (2016) and the 12th National Art Exhibition China Art Award·Creation Award Bronze Award (2014). The 1895 Industrial Relics Reconstruction Plan of Tangzha, Nantong was shortlisted for the 12th National Art Exhibition (2014). The landscape planning and design of Beijing Qianmen Street won the 11th National Art Exhibition China Art Award·Creation Award Bronze Award (2009). Professor Su Dan himself also awarded the “2015 China Design Master Medal” by the China Building Decoration Association.
