Exhibition Profile

Exploring the path of Chinese modern art and responding to the call for social transformation in the past century were the missions of several generations of artists represented by Lin Fengmian and Wu Guanzhong. Their personalities, temperaments, talents and backgrounds were diverse, and the paths they took to explore art were also different. However, they were all heading towards the same endeavor and wrote a glorious chapter of modern Chinese art together with the passion of free creation.

In order to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, this exhibition honors these two giants of Chinese modern art, both of whom studied in France. Tsinghua University Art Museum features over 140 meticulously selected works of Lin and Wu  . Through their paintings, the exhibition showcases their probing and pioneering efforts in the modernization of Chinese painting. It is hoped that the exhibition sheds significant light on the present while commemorating history with a vision towards the future.

Artist Profile

Lin Fengmian was the pioneer and leader of new modern Chinese art. He received rigorous training in Western painting at a young age, he also perceived the serene and distant beauty of Eastern art. he was impressed by the beautiful and elegant images of porcelain displayed in museums, he also had a great interest in other folk arts...It is like opening a door for him to see a path of unlimited creative possibilities.

Wu Guanzhong was a student of Lin Fengmian, and his path of artistic exploration began when he was studying in France. Upon his return to China, he began to paint landscapes and figures, and when circumstances permitted, he quickly moved towards creating art using expressive techniques. Later, he switched freely between representational and abstract styles, producing works that emphasized more subjective feelings.
