Spirit of Invention – the 19th Century Patents Exhibition from American Hagley Museum and Library (HML) will start its China tour in Beijing, Shenzhen and other places from March to September 2018. The exhibition will show 60 pieces of patent models from the period of 1830 to 1890 and a patent approval document signed by President George Washington, his State Secretary and Justice Minister in 1797. The video, VR and picture captions made by the teachers and students of Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University will also be presented in this exhibition just to tell the stories behind the inventions, and give vivid shows on how these patent inventions came into being and applied.
Located in Wilmington, Delaware, Hagley Museum and Library was established by Mr. E.I Dupont in 1802. Its collection covers the early industrial development of the United States, the creation of invention history and rich historical materials about various enterprises. Up till now, Hagley Museum and Library has the collection of nearly 5000 American patents models from 18th century to 19th century, among them 1000 pieces were from Dupont’s families. In 2015, Alan Rothschild donated his collection about 4000 American patents models between 18th century and 19th century to Hagley Museum and Library, which made HML become one of the largest model museums next to Smithsonian institution. This is the first time for Hagley Museum and Library to bring overseas the exhibition of the patents models and it is also the first patents models exhibition from United States to China.
