Professional magazines are vital carriers for disseminating professional information and important media to display new knowledge of industries. Moreover, they are significant forces to promote the production of idea and the making of achievements. In 1900, Shuhua Gonghui Bao (“Newspaper of the Calligraphy and Painting Society”), the first art magazine in China, was launched in Shanghai. Since that, the art design magazines of China have been developing simultaneously with the art design profession in contemporary China, thus with their values as historical materials and for academic purposes.
From the perspective of the art design magazines, the exhibition has collated the design progress in China in modern and contemporary time, displayed the design’s connections with and influences on the real life. It also explores the links between art design magazines and the scholarship, industries and education, shows the influences of art design magazines on promoting art education and design, and embodies the role of the art design on the social awareness and the life of the masses.
