Exhibition Profile

Shen Beixin (1932-) is originally from Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. He grew up in a family with a deep cultural heritage. Shen graduated from the Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1953 and from Konstantin M. Maksimov's Oil Painting Study Class of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1957. His graduation work was a landscape oil painting. In those days, he was the first student to use landscape oil painting as his graduation work, and was thus called "the first Chinese landscape oil painter". The profound transformation of China's social environment in the late 20th century opened the door to the exploration of many artistic styles. It was at this stage that Shen's artistic individuality was fully developed.

Freshness and brightness are the major characteristics of Shen's landscape works. it manifests itself as the reproduction of nature and the extension of humanistic ideals. It sprouts from the painter's vision and broad-mindedness and is embedded in his bright colors and free strokes. In terms of painting style and methodology, color is the most important message in his works that deal with the relationship between colors with high generalization and exaggeration. He is encouraged to use extremely light, heavy and full colors, with pure white blocks and leaping deep strokes often dominating the picture.

Shen’s observation of nature's forms, colors, sunlight and shadows, and his interpretation of nature are related to his personality and his understanding of the values of life. The natural splendor in his works is a reflection of his tranquil heart.
