Tie Yang (1935- ) is an artist schooled in the system of Chinese art education in the 1950s, after the founding of People’s Republic of China. His creations engage a wide range of art forms and materials, and are of remarkable artistic character. Tie Yang describes himself as a laborer who expresses, with his distinct artistic language that is sincere and pure, the characters of the land, of people’s nostalgia, as well as the culture of the specific locations he chooses to represent: the Jizhong Plain, the land of western Hebei, and the Taihang mountains. The seemingly random strokes and colors in these images form a narrative style that is both painterly and literary: they are refreshingly timeless, unadorned and honest, condensed and generous, as well as with a strong spiritual and poetic character distinctly Chinese. This exhibition displays Tie Yang’s oil paintings, watercolor and gouache paintings, ink paintings, illustrations and other works of art over the past 70 years of his career, in the hope that the audience will be able to detect the nuanced perceptions and love of an outstanding artist who feels for his hometown and the everyday life he lives. It is also our hope that the audience can have an idea of the artist’s contributions to, and achievements in, the in-depth exploration of art forms and languages, as well as in the fusion of Chinese and Western cultures and artistic innovations.
