Yao Hua (1876-1930), courtesy name (zi) Chongguang and Yi’e, literary name (hao) Mangfu, also called Lianhua’an Zhu, born in Guizhu (now Guiyang in Guizhou province). He accomplished a poet, scholar, literati, painter, educator, epigraphy scholar, calligrapher, painter and dramatist and was extolled as the “immortal generalist of an era”. He is an artist of impressive attainments for his artworks in rubbing, patterns on copper stationery and letter paper, which gained great recognition from many famous scholars such as Lu Xun, Zheng Zhenduo, Chen Shutong and Guo Moruo. Yao Hua was the most eminent scholar of Guizhou in the past, and was also a Chinese teacher from the very beginning in Tsing Hua College. Base on the cooperation between Tsinghua University Art Museum and Guizhou Provincial Museum, “The Immortal Generalist of An Era: Yao Hua Art Exhibition” is intended to present the versatile scholar and artist by his poetry, calligraphy, painting, seal carving, rubbing as well as patterns on copper stationery and letter paper through those precious exhibits on display.
