Exhibition Profile

2025 marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of Wang Xun, a renowned scholar, art historian, and one of the founding fathers of modern Chinese art history. To honor this distinguished artist who graduated from Tsinghua University and made significant contributions in spite of a turbulent life, and to study his modern academic ideas and systematic methodologies that has greatly influenced the development of art in New China, the Tsinghua University Art Museum is proud to present the exhibition “For the Revival of Chinese Art: The Documentary Exhibition in Commemoration of the 110th Anniversary of Wang Xun's Birth”.

“For the Revival of Chinese Art” originates from Wang Xun's essay The Value of Jade in Chinese Culture, published when he was 22. This work not only serves as a retrospective study of Chinese art history but also offers a profound reflection on the spirit of Chinese art. Building upon this concept, the exhibition showcases historical documents and materials, systematically presenting the development of Wang Xun's academic ideas and notion of “towards the condition of jade”. It highlights his achievements in advancing the improvement of arts and crafts, establishing Chinese art history as a discipline, and composing textbooks of Chinese art history, as well as the achievements of several generations of scholars over the past four decades in cataloging  and studying his works.
