LU Xiaobo

Director

Born in 1959, Mr. Lu graduated from the Central Academy of Arts and Design in 1982 and subsequently joined the faculty. From 1987 to 1990, he studied at the State Academy of Art and Design Stuttgart and the University of Kassel in Germany. He has served as a professor at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University. He is now the director of Tsinghua University Art Museum. He also serves as the Deputy Chair of the Tsinghua University Academic Committee, a Distinguished Professor of the Chang Jiang Scholars Program under the Ministry of Education, Chair of the National Teaching Steering Committee for Design Programs, and Convenor of the 8th Academic Review Panel for Design Studies under the State Council Academic Degrees Committee. He holds additional roles as a national committee member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Vice President of the China Industrial Design Association, President of the Chinese Society for Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting, and a member of the expert group for China's 2035 Science and Technology Development Strategy under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
 
Previously, he served as Dean of the Academy of Arts & Design at Tsinghua University, Director of the Tsinghua University Art and Science Research Center, and Dean of the Tsinghua-Milano Design Institute. He was also Vice President of the 9th China Artists Association and a national committee member of the 7th and 8th China Association for Science and Technology.
 
He has served on panels for major design awards including the China Good Design Award, the Academic Committee of the National Museum of China, the international Red Dot Design Award, Italy's Compasso d'Oro (Golden Compass) Award, and the Seoul Design Award.
 
His academic and creative work spans information art design, industrial design, and ink painting. He is the chief editor of the Design volume of the Encyclopedia of China, and has curated significant exhibitions such as the Beijing International New Media Art Exhibition & Forum, the International Art and Science Exhibition & Symposium, Kiefer in China, and Neo-Obscurism Art Exhibition. He has held multiple art exhibitions both in China and abroad.
 
Mr. Lu has led major national research projects, including the National Social Science Fund Key Project “Research on New Media Art Forms,” the “Theory and Methodology of VR Cultural Product Design” project, and a demonstration project for the National 973 Program on the digital preservation of cultural heritage.
